Digital Restorative Dentistry

Today intraoral scanning can be used instead of standard impression technique. After calculation of a 3D model the data can be sent to an external or internal dental laboratory. Then the dental technician can produce the reconstruction and send it back to the dentist for delivery. Alternatively the dentist can produce restaurations directly at the chairside using a CAD/CAM chairside unit (CEREC system). For the clinical CAD/CAM chairside application, meanwhile we have a huge variety of different bloc materials available on the market, as there are glass ceramic, zirconium di-oxide ceramic, hybrid ceramic and composite blocs. These materials do not only differ regarding strength but also regarding modulus of elasticity, resistance to degradation, resistance to abrasion, surface roughness, adhesiv bonding, aesthetical apperance, polishability and machinability by the CAD/CAM milling unit. All above mentioned aspects and workflows will be discussed in the presentation.
